NWF Heads to Region 8 State Championship, Defeats FSW 69-60

NICEVILLE, Fla. – Northwest Florida is heading back to the Region 8 State Championship game after defeating Florida SouthWestern 69-60 earlier this afternoon. The Raiders were electric on the offensive end, shooting 27-46 (58.7%) from the field. The Raiders will take on Eastern Florida tomorrow, March 11th at 5:00 PM for an automatic bid to Lubbock for the National Championship tournament.

 

The Raiders and Bucs exchanged blows throughout the first half, changing leads 12 times. At halftime, the two were tied at 38. After intermission, Coach Bart Walker fired up the ladies and the Raiders were able to pull away after outscoring the Bucs 19-7 in the 3rd quarter. The lopsided 3rd quarter was credited to a 10-0 run near the end of the quarter, holding the Bucs scoreless for over 7 minutes and making key free throws from Destiney McPhaul and Zayla Tinner.

 

The Raider defense picked it up in the second half, only allowing 22 points and holding the Bucs to 7-33 shooting from the field. Northwest Florida allowed 19 offensive rebounds but, were able to keep FSW from scoring by holding the Bucs to 28 points in the paint. On the offensive end, Destiney McPhaul created many opportunities for the Raiders as she dished out 11 assists. Zayla Tinner led the Raiders with 17 points on 7-8 shooting followed by Sakima Walker with 13 points. Walker recorded her 11th double double of the season with 10 rebounds tonight.

 

Tomorrow's championship will be a heavy weight fight with an automatic bid to Lubbock on the line as #6 Northwest Florida (25-3) will take on #2 Eastern Florida. The Titans are 30-1 this season, with their only loss coming at the hands to Shelton State on New Year's Day. This will be the second time these teams have matched up as they met on December 2nd with the Titans coming away with a 62-53 win in Daytona Beach.
