ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Northwest Florida State women's basketball got a scare to open the season, but the top-ranked Raiders prevailed, 46-45, over No. 19 Florida SouthWestern in the Juco Shootout hosted by St. Petersburg College on Friday.
NWF (1-0) trailed after the first quarter, 15-8, but outscored the Bucs 33-17 over the middle quarters.
Masengo Mutanda paced the Raiders with 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting. She also hauled in a team-high eight rebounds. Noelani Cornfield scored eight points with four rebounds and five assists.
As a team, NWF shot just 34 percent (18-53) from the field, but outrebounded Florida SouthWestern 37-33 and forced 26 turnovers.
Northwest Florida returns to action on Saturday when the team takes on Hillsborough at 11 a.m. (CT). The game will be streamed HERE.
