Raiders Fall in Pair of Close Contests

NICEVILLE, Fla. – Northwest Florida State softball dropped a pair of one-run game to Gulf Coast at the Raider Softball Complex on Tuesday.

Gulf Coast 6, Northwest Florida 5

Gulf Coast scored six runs over the final four innings to take the first game of the doubleheader, 6-5.

Northwest Florida built a 3-0 lead early just to watch as the Commodores offense exploded for six runs and eight hits over the final four frames.

Lele Martinez led off the second with a solo home run, then drove in another on a single in the third. Gabrielle Fischetti singled to left two batters later to give the Raider the early advantage.

Gulf Coast cut the deficit to one with a two-run homer in the fourth and took the lead with a pair of runs in the fifth.

In the fifth, Brittni Rufus slapped an RBI single to score Fischetti to tie the game at 4-all, but it was shot-lived as Emily Greek blasted a solo homer on the second pitch of the sixth inning at Gulf Coast later tacked on another run to secure the lead.

Abby Sulte hit a solo shot with two outs in the seventh, but it was not enough to get NWF back in the game.

Martinez, Fischetti, Rufus, and Cameron Hall all finished with two hits each for the Raiders.

Gulf Coast 8, Northwest Florida 7 (8 innings)

The theme from game one carried over into the nightcap as the Raiders (28-12, 5-5 PC) saw a 7-2 dissipate over the final four innings.

Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the first, Rufus hit a two-RBI triple before Cameron Hall's ground ball plated another run to put NWF up, 3-2.

Sulte struck with a solo homer in the third, her NJCAA-leading 17th of the season, to extend the lead to 4-2. Consecutive RBI hits from Sulte, Fischetti, and Rufus in the fourth gave the Raiders a five-run advantage.

The Commodores scored three runs in the fifth and once each in the sixth, seventh, and eighth to take control of the game.

Northwest Florida returns to action on Friday at Tallahassee. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. (CT).
