Raiders Improve to 10-0 After Defeating Jones College 76-60

PENSACOLA, Florida – Northwest Florida men's basketball secured their tenth win on the season Wednesday afternoon after defeating Jones College, 76-60, capping of their week in Pensacola.

 

Raiders had their best performance of the season from three, shooting a 43.5% clip, making ten of their 23 shot attempts. NWF had a plus-eight rebounding differential over Jones College after pulling in 44 total boards. The Raiders also carried a plus-seven differential over the bobcats in assists, dishing out 18 dimes.

 

Tavion Banks had one of his better performances of the year, recording his second double-double of the season after posting 14 points and 12 rebounds. Tajuan Simpkins led the Raiders in scoring with 15 points, including three made triples, while adding seven rebounds and three assists to his stat sheet. Tyrese Elliott (13) and RaSheed Jones (11) both recorded double-digit scoring outputs, combining for 24 total points. Jadyn Shider was dominate on the glass again after posting his fourth straight double-digit rebounding effort – sixth of the season.

 

NWF now moves to a perfect 10-0 on the season and will looks to match their best start to a season since 2018 (11-0) next Tuesday when the Raiders host Daytona State College from Raider Arena.

 

FIRST HALF

  • Tajuan Simpkins got the scoring started for the Raiders with a running floater from the left side.
  • A Tavion Banks block turned into a fast break opportunity for the Raiders, which was finished with a Tajuan Simpkins dunk, giving NWF an early 4-0 lead three minutes into the ball game.
  • A few possessions later, Tyrese Elliott nailed a triple from the corner, coming off a Tavion Banks feed, giving the Raiders a 9-1 cushion with a little over 15 minutes to play in the half.
  • Elliott later hit a spinning layup while cutting to the basket to give the Raiders their first double-digit lead of the game with just over ten minutes to go in the half.
  • Jamal Sumlin buried a triple from the wing with 8:44 remining in the half, bringing the score to 19-9.
  • This three was immediately answered by a Bobcat three, bringing their deficit back to seven.
  • Raiders turned a couple of Bobcat turnovers into fastbreak scores on the other end to extend the score back to double digits.
  • With under four minutes to go in the opening half, the Raiders continued to pile on the Bobcats as RaSheed Jones stepped into a three from the left wing, giving NWF a 29-14 lead.
  • NWF close out the half on great note, letting Jones CC chip away into their lead a little, while wasting a couple of possessions of their own, but still carried a 35-25 lead headed to the break.

 

SECOND HALF

  • Tavion Banks got the second half of scoring started with a turnaround jumper from the short corner.
  • Tajuan Simpkins later extended the Raiders lead to 15 after nailing a three-point shot from the wing with just over 16 minutes to play.
  • Following a missed shot by the Bobcats, NWF scored a quick transition basket using a Tavion Banks and-one layup.
  • Banks later found Trey Brown open in the paint for an easy layup opportunity, helping the Raiders extend their lead to 49-31 with under 15 minutes to play.
  • Tajuan Simpkins drained another triple from the wing with 11:46 to play giving NWF a 19-point lead.
  • The next possession, RaSheed Jones buried a triple from the corner to give the Raiders a 20-point advantage.
  • Simpkins continued to stay hot from deep as the game progressed, hitting another three with seven-minutes to play.
  • Despite Jones CC chipping into the NWF's lead in the final minutes of the game, the Raiders continued to press the Bobcats on both sides of the ball for the remainder of the game as NWF defeats Jones College 76-60 to secure their tenth win of the season.

 

UP NEXT

The Raiders will be off for the remainder of the week before coming back next week to take on Daytona State on November 28 at 7:30 PM (CST) from Raider Arena
