NWF Hangs on to Defeat No. 6 Trinity Valley in Overtime

PENSACOLA, Florida – In the realm of early-season collegiate basketball, where anticipation runs high, the clash between two formidable top-ten teams promises an intense competition, transforming the court into a stage for a significant showdown that could leave a lasting impression on the season.

 

Today, Northwest Florida State men's basketball secured a thrilling victory in a tense showdown against Trinity Valley, defeating the Cardinals 74-70 in a fierce back-and-forth battle that needed an extra overtime period to settle.

 

The Raiders saw four of its five starters score double digits in the game, but still were never able to pull away from the Cardinals, despite leading for most of the contest. NWF struggled to tame Trinity Valley from deep, allowing the Cardinals to hit on nearly 50% of their three-point attempts.However, the Raiders bread and butter continued to be their rebounding efforts as NWF out gained Trinity Valley 38-27 on the glass.

 

NJCAA Region Eight Player of the Week, Jadyn Shider, had another solid performance today, securing his fourth double-double of the season after scoring ten points and grabbing 13 rebounds in the win. RaSheed Jones led the Raiders in points, posting 16 points with a 40.0% shooting clip for the game. Tajuan Simpkins (14) and Tyrese Elliott (12) also had solid performances as the only two other Raiders to eclipse double digits in scoring.

 

This win marks NWF's second victory over a top-ten opponent this year, helping them maintain their perfect season as the Raiders now move to 9-0 on the year. The Raiders will have another tough draw tomorrow afternoon as they get ready to face Jones College who is off to a 7-1 start to begin the year.

 

 

FIRST HALF

  • Trinity Valley grabbed an early 11-5 lead to begin the game, taking advantage of a couple of empty possessions by NWF.
  • Trey Brown finally put an end to the Raiders scoring doubt with a made floater in the paint, bringing the score to 11-7.
  • Jamal Sumlin later hit a pull up jumper just behind the free-throw line to even the game back up at 11 a piece.
  • RaSheed Jones gave the Raiders their first lead since the opening minute with a made three from the right wing.
  • This sparked to an 11-2 scoring run by the Raiders over the next few minutes, giving them a 22-15 lead with seven minutes remaining in the half.
  • Trinity Valley took advantage of a couple of made free throws and a three to help bring their deficit back down to two.
  • Tajuan Simpkins nailed a triple from the corner to stop the Cardinals scoring run with 4:20 to play in half one.
  • Both teams would trade blows through the final minutes of the half, but it was the Raiders who were able to hang on to a four-point cushion, leading 35-31 at the break.

 

SECOND HALF

  • Raiders got the second half going by making three of their first four shot attempts.
  • The Cardinals kept it close by making some shot attempts of their own, eventually regaining the lead with a three-point shot from the wing, making the score 45-44 with just under 15 to play.
  • Tajuan Simpkins answered right back with a three of his own, draining the triple from the left corner to retake a two-point lead.
  • Both teams exchanged leads over the next five-minutes of play with neither team showing any signs of pulling away.
  • That was until the Raiders forced a turnover and took advantage of fast break opportunity with RaSheed Jones racing down the floor for a layup, bringing the Raiders lead back to four with just under ten-minutes to play.
  • Cardinals were able to cut the Raiders lead back down to one thanks to a steal and fastbreak layup, bringing the score to 62-61 with under five-minutes to play.
  • After some more back-and-forth scoring, the Cardinals were finally able to tie up the game with ten seconds to play after a fade away three from the wing went in, evening the game at 66 apiece.
  • RaSheed Jones had a chance to win the game in the final seconds but couldn't get his three-point attempt to go down as regulation ended in a 66-66 draw, sending the game into overtime.

 

OVERTIME

  • Both teams traded baskets to begin overtime and keep the game even at 68.
  • Jamal Sumlin hit a pull up jumper from the free-throw line giving NWF a two-point lead with under two-minutes to play.
  • The Cardinals came right back down the floor and knocked down an and-one layup sending them to the line for the lead.
  • After Trinity Valley missed the and-one free throw, the Raiders came back up the floor and regained the lead with a wide-open layup by Jadyn Shider.
  • Some stout defense by the Raiders kept Trinity Valley from being able to score on their next two possessions, forcing them to rely on intentional fouls to keep their hopes alive.
  • This proved not to make a difference as NWF hangs on to defeat Trinity Valley, 74-70.

 

UP NEXT

NWF will close out the Pensacola State Classic with a game against Jones College tomorrow afternoon beginning at 1:00 PM (CST).
