Raiders Bypass Bison With a 48 Point Victory On Opening Night

NICEVILLE, Florida – On a crisp Wednesday evening in Niceville, the atmosphere inside Raider Arena was nothing short of scorching as Northwest Florida State dominated Southern Union with a commanding 90-42 victory in their season opener. The Raiders showcased their prowess by shooting an impressive 50.8% from the field, with five different players achieving double-digit scores.

 

Redshirt freshman, RaSheed Jones led the way with 22 points, while adding five assists, four rebounds and three steals, and even knocked down four threes. Jamal Sumlin made his Raider debut after redshirting the 2022-23 season and came away with 15 points and seven rebounds. Jadyn Shider (14) and Tyrese Elliott (12) also played a big role in today's win as they both reached double-digits in the scoring column.

 

Notably, freshman guard/forward Karahan Efeoglu made a massive impact off the bench with 14 points of his own, while securing nine boards – the most of any Raider tonight. In total, ten different Raiders saw the floor, with all but one finding themselves in the scoring column.

 

As a team, NWF shot 50.8% from the floor, 38.5% from three and 55.2% from the charity stripe. The Raiders were also plus 18 in rebounds, plus eight in assists and plus nine in steals. Overall, it was a solid night for a team that was ranked No. 1 in the NJCAA and FCSAA coaches poll prior to the season, and a team that it looking to make another trip to a national title game after falling just short of winning it all last season.

 

FIRST HALF

  • The Raiders got off to a hot start in the first half, jumping out to an early 15-8 lead through the first five minutes of action.
  • RaSheed Jones knocked down the first three pointer of the game with 17:32 on the clock to push the Raiders lead to six.
  • Tyrese Elliott sunk his first triple of the game with 11:29 left in the half, giving the Raiders a commanding 13 points lead.
  • A couple of turnovers by NWF and a made three by the Southern Union allowed the Bison to close the gap to eight points just under the eight-minute mark.
  • However, Karahan Efeoglu had other plans and brought the Raiders lead back to double digits with a three pointer of his own, bringing the score to 27-16.
  • The Raiders would ride this momentum the rest of the half, closing out the first with 40 points to the Bisons 28.

 

SECOND HALF

  • NWF capitalized on a couple of quick turnovers to start the half with a couple of fastbreak scores by RaSheed Jones and Jadyn Shider.
  • From there, the Raiders started to pile on the Bison, jumping out to a 64-32 lead with just 11:34 remaining in the game after a 17-0 scoring run.
  • Tyrese Elliot knocked down his second triple of the game with just under ten to go, giving the Raiders a 38-point lead.
  • RaSheed Jones answered right back with another three of his own – his fourth of the night – giving NWF a whopping 74-35 lead.
  • The Raiders would keep the gas on the pedal the rest of the way, closing out the game on a 16-7 run, ultimately finishing with a 48-point victory.

 

UP NEXT

The Raiders will return to the court this Friday at 7:30 for another early-season showdown, facing off against East Central College. They'll then wrap up the week with a home game on Saturday at 4:00 PM against East Mississippi College.
