Late Free Throw Lifts Raiders to Win

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Marseilles Caston made a layup and was fouled with 1.5 seconds remaining, then the freshman converted the free throw to lift Northwest Florida to an 80-79 victory over Daytona State on the final day of the JUCO Shootout in Gainesville Sunday.

Caston was 10-for-18 from the field in the game to finish with a game-high 28 points. Seth Millner had 15 points and Shakwon Barrett turned in 12. Szymon Wojcik narrowly missed a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds.

The Raiders (10-4) trailed by as many as 15 points in the first half and went into the halftime break down four, 43-39. The team shot just 27.3 percent in the first half but were 17-of-35 (48.6 percent) over the final 20 minutes. As a team, NWF converted 21 of its 22 free throw attempts in the winning effort.

Five Daytona State players scored in double digits led by Issa Muhammad who turned in 18 points and 15 rebounds.

Northwest Florida will now enjoy a two-week break for the holidays before returning to the court Dec. 30-31 for the Gulf Coast Classic.
