Raider 9 have winning opening weekend in Auburndale to start the 2022 Season

Opening weekend! The start of a new season, a completely new group, and three good opponents to start the season. "The start of the season is always incredibly exciting." Said Head Coach Doug Martin. "We have to rise to the challenge every time out, it's good to see what you have against a team wearing another jersey."

 

Northwest Florida claimed a 7-4 victory on Friday, despite a big push by Polk State in the second inning.

 

The Raiders got things started in the first inning when freshman Blake Cavill singled on a 1-2 count, scoring one run. Caleb Reis toed the rubber for Northwest Florida. The RHP surrendered four runs on four hits over two innings, striking out three. Relief Pitcher Dante Chirico, was the man of the hour for the Raiders. The Sophomore RHP came in and went 4 innings pitched with 7 punch outs and gave up only 1 hit.

 

NWF launched one home run on the day. Cherokee Nichols went yard in the first inning. The Raiders had ten hits in the game. Diego Guevera and AJ Fritz all had multiple hits for NWF.

 

NWF took the lead late and defeated St. Petersburg College 3-1 on Friday.

 

The game was tied at one with NWF batting in the bottom of the sixth, when an error scored two runs on a Mason Janz ground ball for Northwest Florida. The pitching was strong on both sides. The Raider pitching staff struck out 11, while St. Petersburg College pitchers sat down five.

Big RHP Jake Madden made his debut in NWF black in front of all 30 MLB organizations and did not disappoint. The Redshirt-Freshman, Alabama Commit, was 93-96 and up to 97.Madden Gave up a hit to the leadoff hitter, then settled in after a big double play. Madden struck out 4, then gave way to RS-Freshman Jacob Phillips. Phillips kept St. Pete off balance and off the scoreboard till the offense could respond. AJ Fritz came in and got the Save for the Raiders.

Carlos Guzman went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead NWF in hits. 

 

On a brisk 40 degree morning, NWF watched the game slip away early and couldn't recover in a 5-0 loss to Santa Fe College on Saturday.

Santa Fe College took the lead on a single in the first inning. Santa Fe College fired up the offense in the first inning, when Billy Graham singled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring one run.

One bright spot for NWF was a single by Blake Cavill in the first inning. Sophomore Joel Sarver was on the mound for Northwest Florida, striking out five and walking one. Brandon Smith, Caleb Logerwell and Caleb Gallant each contributed in relief for the Raiders.

 

NWF is back to work this week, then plays in the Panama City Beach College Baseball Classic this weekend and squares off with perineal power San Jacinto. First pitch for that game is TBA, as are the games Saturday and Sunday.
