Nichols Walk-Off Leads Raiders Past Coastal Alabama - South

NICEVILLE, Fla. – No. 4 Northwest Florida State baseball split a pair of games against Shelton State and Coastal Alabama – South on Friday at the Raider Baseball Complex. The Raiders fell to Shelton State, 8-6, before rallying to defeated Coastal Alabama – South in the nightcap.

Shelton State 8, Northwest Florida 6

Shelton State struck for three runs in the ninth to pull out the win in a back-and-forth contest that saw three ties and four lead changes.

The Raiders (11-5) took a 2-0 lead in the first on an Austin Kelly sacrifice fly and a Buccaneer wild pitch. Shelton State answered with three runs in the second to claim the lead, but an Austin Turner RBI double in the bottom half to tie the game at 3-all.

After the teams traded runs in the eighth, the Bucs pulled away by manufacturing three runs in the ninth despite not collected a hit.

Turner finished the game 3-for-4 with a double and a pair of runs scored. Luke Boynton and Seth Williams also collected doubles, while Tyler Kehoe and Trace Willhoite each tripled.

Northwest Florida 6, Coastal Alabama – South 5

Cherokee Nichols ripped an 0-1 pitch into left field scoring Tyler Kehoe to hand Northwest Florida a 6-5 win over Coastal Alabama – South.

Coastal Alabama took a 3-1 lead in the third on a bases clearing double, but the Raiders fought right back in the third. With two outs, Reagan Burford drove in Seth Williams with a single and Trace Willhoite tied the game with an RBI double.

Trailing 5-3 with two runners on in the sixth, Williams reached on a throwing error allowing both runners to score and again drawing the teams level.

Williams and Willhoite had two hits each in the game. Joel Sarver got the start on the mound and allowed four earned runs and struck out four in six innings of work. Harrison Dorsett tossed a scoreless seventh to earn the victory.

Northwest Florida rounds out the weekend on Saturday at 12 p.m. against Shelton State.
